According to in-game information, deathclaws are more likely to attack the vault if the vault doors are opened, immediately after sending dwellers to the wasteland or on quests and if there is a radio station broadcasting out to the wasteland.

And when they do, be prepared! Have your highest leveled dwellers equipped with your most powerfull weapons on the first floor. I suggest, when you have spare dwellers, to make two of them guard the entrance, to soften up anything that finds its way in. My normal setup is to have two level 50's in the entrance with 22+ dmg weapons, and a three wide radio room with the best weapons that I have at the time, and a Mr. Handy, for that little extra. That's usually enough to keep them from advancing to the second level. I had my radio room set up with missile launchers and fat mans, but soon found out that with the slow rate of fire, that the Deathclaws won't take enough damage, and would continue to terrorize the rest of the vault. So along with high damage weapons, make sure they have a decent rate of fire. It isn't mandatory to have this, but it helps if you don't like deathclaws roaming around below the first couple of levels.
Solid advice. Also, be well stocked with Stimpaks before you open the door, bacause you'll need about 20 (at least, I seem to)
