the usual: explore wasteland, questing and rushing rooms ...
however nothing beats actually playing the game real time and farming mysterious stranger and the cap boni for resources ...

Increase your dwellers' luck above 5. They earn caps just working.

There are some ways to get caps and weapons. Some are mentioned from the above guys.Save and reload(some say its cheat and mod but ofcourse is a usual action to any game)for the tips that follow. It may take a little time but you can get vast amounts of caps.1)Good weapons, items and caps from lunchboxes.2)Finding the mysterious stranger.3)When a production room finish its work a press it to get the resources some times on top of the resources you get some money.Dont rush the rooms or incidents may happen. While you are outside the game for any reason even save and reload the production rooms continue to product their goods,no incidents happen while you are out of the game, the in game timer stands still and you can try to get more resources and caps. All of them using save-reload.The lunchboxes can give 500 caps, the mysterious stranger (for me)gave once nearly 2000 caps, and the production rooms can give nearly 500 caps or even more just each one of them with one production so we speak about a lot of caps(multiple caps from as more of production rooms as possible).

Here's how to hack your caps.

https://rakion99.github.io/shelter-editor/

Instructions: Download Fallout Shelter from Steam, and then go to your search bar. Search for %appdata%, open it. On the top bar should be a button called AppData among other buttons, click AppData and open Local. Find FalloutShelter and double-click it. Then press and hold the notepad file/save file you want to edit, and carry it over to rakion99. It will then open up a screen that allows you to edit your caps and other things. When you're done, it will give you a new notepad file. Open that notepad file, and highlight some of it. Then rightclick it and press 'Select All', then copy it and open the original file, then select all the text, delete it, paste in the new text, and save the file.

Keep playing until you get lunchboxes through objectives, quests, or weekly evaluation. Then use the gear/weapons to explore the wastes.

if i wanted ill just change the timer on my pc

I just thought that. With the pc timer exploit you can set it seven days later and because of the weekly evaluation of the game you will get a new luncgbox immediately. Then set the timer to the real tiime(or even any date within the month as starting point) and then set it again seven days later and you get another lunchbox within seconds. You can do that as many times you want and when you tired of it set the timer to the real date. And you can do it again another time to get more lunchboxes, without doing any damage, its no cheat or mod or trainer. The only thing you must be careful with is to not change the year. And the change of time better do from a starting point to a changed point within the same month.Nothing bad happens again if you start from the end of a month and the change point belongs to the next month but you may not get the bonus caps and lunchboxes.Thats all.

Sending dwellers out on quests is the best and most effective way to collect caps, but especially do the one where you have to rescue Bottle and Cappy. Because once you have completed all the episodes of their mission, the last episode where you rescue them, they will say, as a thank you for rescuing them, they will now pay you visits to your vault, which lasts for a couple minutes per visit (their visits, which never ends, doesn't last for a limited time, but for all time), wandering around the rooms in your vault, and if you keep your eye on them the whole time, if you see either of them start dancing, and manage to click them before they stop dancing, it gives you caps. Cappy only gives you caps, but Bottle is especially good to click on in time when you see him dancing, because, even when being able to give caps, just like Cappy, he can also give you nuka-cola bottles. Usually, with each visit, you can collect anywhere from 1-2000 caps, depending on how many times you successfully managed to click them when they were dancing. And they visit quite often, so it's much easier to get caps once you've rescued them in their quest.

send strongest for wasteland explore with maxed luck at least

any time frame in particular or just as much as possible as often as possible?
Wasteland best between 12-18 hours then return (if have 4x wasteland return speed pet), if not bring wasteland cap + pet or wear luck / perception cloth on highest or maxed SPECIAL dweller and do runs between 4-8 hours (so wasteland return time is reasonable)
