How do I load a save?

I saved the game, then left it afk by accident. I come back and some of my dwellers are dead I used all of my caps to revive them and am still working to revive the last one.

How do I load the save? I loaded it and it still went back to the progress it made while I was afk, as if I never saved it.

Are you saved before exiting the game? AFAIK you can't load saves, you just load the vault at it's last state (i.e save)

If it just loads at it's last state then what's the point of saving?
