Send a couple dwellers into the wasteland and they will pick up weapons eventually. If you send them out without meds, they'll die in a few hours (assuming you don't recall them in time), but you can just revive them with caps. Equip most dwellers with weapons at the start, even if they're terrible. You don't want to waste time dragging dwellers into rooms every time something bad happens.
Also, it's really not worth upgrading the Vault Door. Late game, it gets frustrating because even Deathclaw attacks take a bit of time for them to break in, which only delays their otherwise quick death. (Early game does suck though, I had to make a 3rd save for whatever achievements I can't get on my Bethesda.net saves.)
Make sure the first room next to the vault entrance is a 3-sized Power Room, equip the people there with the best weapons you have, and you should be fine.
If the raiders manage to leave the room, it's easier to not drag your dwellers and instead just move the weapons by removing them and resassigning them to the people in that other room. That also avoids the time that they'd usually need to travel around.
It's annoying because the controls are subpar (to nobody's surprise given that it's a mobile port), but you should get the hang of it after a few attempts.
