Yeah, that's what I do.
Just keep a very well armed person guarding door at all times (preferably a max level character with high damage gun)
Why guard the door with 1 or 2 folks when you can have 6 beating on invaders in the first room they run too?
But I agree with you, no point in putting guards in the entry room... but I do send them in when raiders charge my vault.
Try having a water treatment plant as first room and watch the ferral ghouls drop like flies :D

I'd imagine 2 people needing stimpacks repeatedly, not that that matters, what with having plenty of them.
Feral ghouls drop like flies in my power plant too.
This is official Fallout lore give by a ghulified vault tec overseer in FO4.
Plus, would you really trust anything Vault-Tec said. Maybe you've got the vault where they decided to make the vault door from putty and damp cardboard just to see what'd happen. ;)
