if you close the game for several hours and come back to do your stuff, then exploring is way faster and your vault dweller will have max. one level-up.
if you're actively playing your vault, then the vault dwellers can level-up pretty fast. so fast that it can become annoying to switch their outfit back and forth before leveling them up.
2) Outfitter
3) Solo worker or in a group is identical.
Check the site here, a guy tested it (intense) out, job, time and how much it brings about exp.

yes, that is what i thought, but i was not sure if they maybe get less xp so it would negate the effect of auto-levelling. but it seems that this is not the case.
if they survive they generally hit level 50 in one go in my games from level 1. just gear them up and let them lose. takes about 3 days or so. 2 days out 1 day back,
I have sent out lvl 50's (for 3 or 4 days), and they normally come back with more stimpacks and radaways than they left with.
