IMHO the best way to use engines to make automated manoeuvres between closest objects. Once I went out from warp on distance 80 km from my home station. Using RCS I spent about 20 minutes to approach it. It would be better if I could use engines to reduce time to approach station in "auto" mode using them. The auto mode can be limited to a distance of approximations by no more than 1-5 km.
Second, if I understand engines more powerful than RCS so They can be used for moving entire station to friend's station (to build fortress :) ) nowadays for this, I have to separate it by modules.
Or for change entire station orbit. I agree with previous comments that information about orbit ship and selected target on HUD is useful.
It's a sad fact - space is just so ♥♥♥♥♥♥ BIG! It's something that games like this are helping us to properly realise - just how feekin big it is! Even at 10% scale it is still TOO big. Makes you wonder if we will ever be able to leave the Solar System? But I guess that is how people thought at the turn of the century about heavier than air flight, and now just 100+- years later we have the A380! So never say never.
Anyways back on subject - I have long wished for more 'realistic' games so I don't mind that it takes a while to travel long distances - that said it has to be 'game' long time not 'reality' long time. I could cope with setting my ship up to go to next system, switching off and logging back in the next day to find I'm about to arrive. Even having an auto pilot take her in if I'm unable to log back in at the right time. Maybe one can have another character to play while you are travelling? As a previous poster said - if there's plenty of interesting stuff to do on the way then that helps.
Also the survey drone idea is a good one - setting up a wormhole end point. The idea of folding space does seem to be taken seriously by emminent physicists.
I think I understand your point about joining a planets orbit being tricky but surely that doesn't have to be done manually and can be done by computer - I don't see that as braking immersion. Hell I'd like you to add that feature to linking stuff to ones base - I still haven't managed to link the airlock yet!!! - So atm I'm both loving and hating Hellion in equal measure :)
Despite i know you are still in development stage, the game fights with the lore itself, i wonder why,
1)Hellion's lore.
if human kind manage to do a vojage to reach another star, ships computer aren't able to calculate how to automatically set a couse, please givve me a reason, apollo landing was made with a computer rather similar to a commodore 64!! - You must implement automatical orbital operations AND warp drive for the sake of Hellion's lore! and don't get starter with "yeah but the ship you may use is a simple ship bla bla bla cannot warp bla bla cannot dock automatically" nosense!!
2)distruttive warp effects
I've seen many space sims in my whole gamers carrer, however let me tell you straight this: Hellion warp effect is the worsth i ever seen, and even dangerous for your eyes health! please! set it as Star citizen or another!
I understand this is a survival space multiplayer game, however i cannot understand why the starting loot always sucks harder! sometimes you didn't get any utility needed to proper fix your base, for the sake of realism, you should die in a couple of hours for system malfunction, but this doesn't happens so, please, set loot to a decent state to let us fix the starting base OR force players to abandon it, the situation right now is in the middle, and no one likes half meat and half fish situations
Right now, you may have only one friends to start a game with, others are forced to spawn in a different place and many of them simply start and restart many times until they at least are in a near planet to have a chance to find themselves, plus if you add to this issue the troubled manual nasty difficoult warp sistem, where you also have to wait, you may have the complete picture why most of my friends won't play anymore; That said, please, give us the possibility to spawn more players at the start so me and my crew can meet from the start and play together and have fun!
Despite the game is in beta stage, there are very few reason to keep the community to bind with this game, and help developers, due unfriendly UI, too much time consuming warp mechanics, only 2 start point in the base, and so on, plus, who needs to harvest asteroids for resources when you may roam around the planets and find what you need? you have killed the first reason why i bought this game! i felt my self stupid when i've showed my friends how i was skilled to harvest resources from an asteroid and he said" bah! is more easy to find other ships/modules to have what you need!"
I want to get care of my base, my ship, and i want to go outside to change malfuncion modules, repair the base hull, in short taking care of my belonging is rather impossible, and when we finally manage to build a base and find all the modules to replace those broken(the only goal you have today) the next patch will simply erase your hours of fun with friends. No one likes to waste their time in such way, you may start twice to do the same things, then everythings get boring (due also unfriendly game mechanics) and players simply leave.
it sucks! in short it sucks! it's a mule dedicated for working, harvesting and guess what? have only ONE seat!! lol! the cabin is wide and long enought to host 6 seats! but now only the pilot/map charter/warp engineer can use it, other players simply stay on foot roaming meaningless the little upper space! i wonder why you did't implement more seats! thi si s a moo? well so my friend could help me to find other stranded modules meanwhile i try to dock, and the other maybe can scan the nearby asteroid for resources! NO! for hellion developers, you must do everythings by yourself! rather hilarious and not funny
So rather than compressing time, you compress space, although the actual effect would likely be that the player would witness some degree of teleportation flicker as they jumped along in acceleration.
During retrograde, prograde, or other maneuvering adjustments, the ship would function under normal acceleration. This basically means that the Acceleron Drive only kicks in when making an orbital acceleration maneuver to change orbit, or escape orbit. Everything in between is under normal engine and maneuvering thruster power.
Given all maneuvers which enable transit between planets and objects/moons in orbital mechanics use specific burns, you should safely be able to limit the requirements while giving the time saving benefits of higher velocities achieved through what would normally be extreme acceleration.
