That's a bummer. I am sure lots of people would appreciate to have the option to host those servers themselves. That certainly can hurt the sales a bit considering the nature of the game, but I guess it'll work out somehow.
Exactly. Where does the logic come from that penalized a consumer like that.
:/ have you considered this from the dev's viewpoint? it is an early access and they are still working on content and might even have to change the server stuff in the back end quite often so ensuring the games stability and quality content must come before private dedicated servers of any kind, and even if they can do private servers now i can and do understand why they would not because they can not pull debugging information from private servers to figure out problems solve them then test new content.
And look i do get it with a game like this sometimes you only want to play with a small group of trusted friends and associates without worrying about random server resets and the like but for a game at this stage doing so is extremely unwise and self destructive towards the improvement of features and bug fixing alike.
In short be patient and if this feature is an absolute must for you before you will play the game then by all means hold off on purchasing until the features and content are where you expect them to be for you to enjoy it.
If they are allowing third party server hosting / renting, then they have the files to do dedicated servers. To be honest the only thing I can think of as to why they would allow a hosting company to offer the servers but not allow personal dedicated servers is $$$. You would get a lot more data from personal servers then you would from one host. The hosting company is just going to spin them all up on the same hardware, where allowing personal servers are going to give you huge variety of different hardware and software. Sure this is going to cause more problems at first but getting these bugs fixed / the increase in sales and hype is important. I know for now that 4 purchases are on hold until dedicated servers are possible. With all that said I am still excited for the game and will eagerly await the dedicated server release.
They do can pull this information anyway. They'd just need to ask the hosts to allow it.
What's better, having the users host the servers themselves and the possibility to have them upload the data or having little to none servers because not enough people want to pay a third party? Not to mention to get more data on various hardware that way.
Tbh, that's a rather extreme example since there will be people renting those servers anyway. I am just saying that it's not a good approach and while I personally think the game looks awesome, I won't consider purchasing it until the server files are open to everyone. Self-hosted servers are simply better than those mass-VM's.
Btw I am assuming people have the option to play together without a server at all (or rather have their client act as server). That's still not the same as having the ability to set-up a real dedicated server, but if you were to force them to rent a server, you surely need to provide an outstanding and unique gameplay experience to justify this.
That's very likely to be a choice for those who decide to rent a server. At least you'd expect them to pick a company that can host globally. Otherwise the game won't be interesting for certain regions until there are other options.
I have to agree with some of the comments in this thread,
This move does seem negative especially to those who have the resources needed to host a dedicated server or multiple servers.
Could you provide the community with any additional information as to why this approach was taken?
I am assuming for development reasons but it would be awesome to hear why private servers are being excluded access to the server tools, was it due to a financial agreement with said hosting companies?
Just interested in clearing up speculation.
Right again. Milking consumers, which hasn't historically gone over with consumers.
Honestly, that's one thing that I also suspect (it certainly is not uncommon). But I don't like to imply such things, so let's have a developer give a statement about it (assuming they're willing to).
all space multiplayer games has such option , cuz you cant force people to "rent" a server from your preferred hosting service that you have a contract with them .
In order to make a great game , you need great gamers ;) and great gamers loves the option to have their own home servers .
here is a list of other similar concept games for you to learn from them how to make players happy with a multiplayer:
Pulsar : Lost colony , Take on mars , Empyrion - Galactic survival , Interstellar rift , Space Engineers ... and there's a lot more .
have a good gaming , Best4Gamers.
