Perhaps its helpful to think that Skin Manager is the mod (and can be installed via UMM) whereas each skin is more of an addon for the mod (with different install instructions) and less of a mod itself
OK, I'm looking at the folders for the game. The Mods folder is available but the locomotive type folder is not, nor are the rest of the folders. I had to hand-create a folder for the skin manager mod.
Is there a specific name for the locomotive train car type folder I need to use, or is it just "Locomotives"?
If Skin Manager is installed properly you should see the folder:
.../steamapps/common/Derail Valley/Mods/SkinManagerMod/Skins/
If there is(/was) no 'SkinManagerMod' folder then Skin Manager isn't installed, you'll need to double check how you set up UMM and start again.
Once Skin Manager is installed properly then you can start adding skins. The DE2 and DE6 are named 'loco_621' and 'locoDiesel' respectively, while the steamer is 'loco_steam_H' and 'loco_steam_tender'. Most skins are zipped with their proper file structure, allowing you to use a Windows shortcut: copy the entire folder 'Skins' from your unzipped skin mod onto the existing folder 'Skins' at the above filepath and it'll move everything appropriately.
Well, I followed all your instructions, all statuses are "OK", skins are installed, and yet I'm not seeing them change in-game.
With Skin Manager installed you'll have a new mode on your remote for switching skins. With skins in their proper directories they should either always apply or have a chance to apply (can't remember which) automatically, but you can also point your skin-switching remote at a loco to change its skin. If your skins aren't options there then the skin still isn't in the right folder; compare to the filepath on the Skin Manager mod page:
\Derail Valley\Mods\SkinManagerMod\Skins\<train-car-type>\<skin-name>\<skin-files>
I've verified that the files are in the right folders and the path is correct. Still no skins or mode on the comms radio.
If there's no 'reskin' option on your radio then either Skin Manager is out of date or still not installed properly. Check that it is version 2.5.0
Perhaps I should have mentioned earlier but you'll know UMM is working properly when it loads a popup window on game start, or you can access it in game with ctrl-F10 (If you can't then UMM isn't installed properly). Check on that window that Skin Manager is running, and in the logs tab see if there's anything prefixed [SkinManagerMod] that looks like an error. It should say:
[Manager] Loading mods.
[SkinManagerMod] Version '2.5.0'. Loading.
[SkinManagerMod] Active.
[Manager] FINISH. SUCCESSFUL LOADED 1/1 MODS.
First off, here's the link to the Mikado: https://www.nexusmods.com/derailvalley/mods/218?tab=files
Second, I've confirmed Skin Manager is version 2.5.0.
Third: FOUND IT! Looks like UMM wasn't installed properly. (I installed it using Assembly mode because DoorstopProxy wasn't working. Or so I thought.)
Problem fixed! All three mods and both skins loaded! (I got the numbers and a knuckle coupler mod too).
Thanks Peanut!
I only have the skins and three mods.
Ehh, true. But it's not likely - I've got what I want. Union Pacific really is terrific.

Of course if they add more American trains to the game, then I'm going to want more skins for them.
