And unloads them once at the destinations. Listen for a bell, which indicates the loading/ unloading of passengers.
And yes you need to make sure you're at the correct platform.
1: the job must have been accepted in the station building
2: you must be coupled up to the cars with your locomotive.
If you coupled your engine to the train before accepting the job (recommended), the passengers may already have boarded until you get back to your train. If you're couple to the train after accepting the job you'll hear the standard loading sound after a few seconds and then the conductors whistle. Early versions of the mod had the displays changing to "boarding now" and "ready to depart" but I'm not sure about the latest version.
If you don't hear the loading thump-thump-... check if you're at the correct train (Job number vs. car inscription), if you are you most likely missed the sounds and indications and are good to go (as enough time has passed while checking that the boarding is finished anyway).
