Want to test if a 30 speed limit is there for a reason? Try to pass the junction/curve faster with the hand-car, free of any damage in the case of derailment. It is missing a speedometer though.
Handcars have been mostly replaced by more efficient and specialized equipment, such as advanced motorized counterparts and high-rail vehicles (regular cars and trucks capable of traveling on both roads and rails).
However, it appears that the game is set in late 1970s or early 1980s Europe, which is incredibly interesting. This might have been a period when handcars were more commonly utilized as a cost-effective means of transportation within industrial rail yards.
Regardless of the scenario, I find them to be both enjoyable and efficient to use. :D
