Help, Need car on other side of locomotive!
Hello, I'm in a bit of a pickle, I took on a shunting job where I need to load cars on A7L at SM. The last car that I need to couple on said line and load is on the opposite side of my locomotive. How do I remedy this?

If you don't want to sandwich your locomotive between cars (which I think might still work but makes it difficult to use the locomotive again later), I'd suggest taking the other cars you already have onto an empty track in the main yard, where you can then run around them on a different yard track to get on the other side of them, and then couple them with the last car.

Another solution is to fire up another loco to help with the situation, if there is one available at SM. Shunting jobs could be easier with two or more locos working around.

Guys, please only reply if you're adding something useful to the discussion.

What I do in runaround situations where there's no track to runaround, I choose the track with the least amount of cars and push them out to the main line. Then when the job is completed, I put them back.

You could use the triangle entry between the Steel Mill and the Farm to turn the train around

Another, somewhat risky way is to do "flying switch". Throw the turnout to A7L to some other track, accelerate with a car to 10-15 km/h, uncouple while moving, speed up the locomotive again and as soon as it passes A7L switch, throw it back and let the car roll there under its own momentum.

That doesn't really work anymore, as uncoupling sets the handbrake. In pancake mode / non-realistic there are controls you can use to un-set it again, but I'm in VR. I just use a triangle or empty siding to get to the other side of the car.

I have both "Remote Handbrake" and "Automatic handbrake" turned off, so for me it works.

It does work, uncoupling only sets the handbrake in comfort mode of you enabled it in custom settings. What i do to bring cars into A6I or similar is go with 10kmh, uncouple the cars behind me, pull ahead with the locomotiv past the switch and flip it before the cars. Easy to do.

Often at Steel Mill there is no empty siding, so if i want to get onto the other side of a consist i push it in the siding with least cars, bring the locomotiv onto the other side through the through lane, then push the cars out onto main line and pull the cars that are supposed to be on the siding back in, then couple to my cars now from the other side.

The Y intersection is also usefull and less work.

Watch out turning the entire train at the Steel Mill Wye. Two of the three chords have wicked grades and you might stall if you don't have enough power.

When I manually toggle the shuttlecocks, uncouple the air hose, unscrew the screw and unhook the coupler, then yes, I have to manually set the hand brake too. But that's not a feasible way of uncoupling while moving (especially in VR), and the remote most certainly sets the handbrake when uncoupling in Standard.

Thanks for the idea, it worked! Also I didn't cause this situation to happen, its literally the first job in my new career, the cars spawned that way.
