I'm also thinking to remove it. And yeah, no need to have that tone.
Shame on you...
I bought this game, well knowing mutiplayer was at the the bottom of the milestone list (saying "we will try")
This indicates to me at least, if you get enough resources for it, it will happen, but in the end it was nothing but a lie?
I know it's a bit tough for everyone that isn't in the discord server to see the conversations, but "multiplayer" as an idea was *never* a thing. ever. the only idea was 2 player co-op which as time went on seems to be that it won't pan out.
Could there have been a better job being transparent about that here in the steam forums? 100%, but in their discord server ANY time the topic of multiplayer or co-op pops up someone from the team and sets realistic expectations.
2 player co-op was always a "they'll give it a go" kind of thing
Multiplayer was never a planned feature. Every time I said "2-player co-op is something we will try and may not succeed at", even here on Steam, and even at the unlocks page itself. That stance hasn't changed. Nevertheless, over the years people have increasingly expected it as something that's definitely coming in the future. I want to remove it from the list in order to eliminate that false expectation. It still is, and always will be "something we will try and may not succeed at", despite not being on the list, for as long as we can afford it.
With the current ongoing development on the game, we do not have the time, unfortunately, to spend on multiplayer testing. Not until the base features/content are in place. It's not just about time allocation, but simply certain things need to be done first for any work on networking to make sense.
Given how much work is left to do on Derail Valley, there may be years before we can begin to look into the 2-player co-op. And even then everyone would be disappointed, because the expectation is a fully blown multiplayer, supporting many players driving trains at once.
Hence, there's no point in making people increasingly being interested in it, until we know it's feasible to begin with. This is why I want to remove it from the list.
No one should expect any sort of multiplayer. If it ever happens, that will it be a bonus. That has always been the stance.
I do take the responsibility of putting it on the list all these years ago being a mistake. Back then we genuinely thought we'd get to it within a couple of months and see if it's feasible or not. However, player feedback has often made our plans change, and making the core game more complex and of higher fidelity level than we originally anticipated has become our primary path. And it prove to be the right path.
I find it disappointing that someone would think I, or anyone else in the team, would deliberately lie about our plans. Decisions have to be made on the spot on a project like this, that is not backed by an infinite pile of money. Not everything can be perfectly predicted years in advance. Yet, we still remain very close to what we promised. It's really hard to do that, as there's a lot of dependencies that need to be taken into consideration.
I'm sad that as the project grows the communication with the community grows more difficult too. No matter what I say and how precise I tend to be, someone's going to make an accusation. I understand that's inevitable, but you should be aware that this is what makes it harder to be fully transparent to most companies out there.
I guess that is how it is where you come from, but where I live. If an employee (or store owner) tries to sell me something which turns out not to be what he/she claims, you can be sure I would not hesitate to tell them to their face.
My own education in sales and commerce taught me to never lie to a customer because no matter what, you will always end out losing.
Now it seems like some of you misunerstood what I meant. When I mentioned Multiplayer, I did in fact mean 2 player co-op. And yes. It did in fact state on the milestone at the bottom of the list. "2 player co-op (we will give it a try)" Might not be the exact wording, but you understand.
What it certainly did NOT say was something like "2 player co-op (we will just abandon this idea and say thankyou for the funds)
Now I'm perfectly happy with a feature like this being last on the priority list. (as expected)
It can in fact be implemented later, like it have been on other games (Even some games which the dev claimed it would be impossible for, ended up with the modding community doing it for them)
But for the dev to upright go back on his own word and not trying in the first place, is lying.
But it is what it is.
I guess this will just end up as another "singleplayer train game"
Thank you to the dev for responding.
Please read my post again and see how that still applies. We will still "give it a try and may not succeed", but I will remove it from the list because some people expect more than was said. That is literally what I wrote every time, and the fact that I need to repeat that just proves my point. Some people don't read what was said.
Having in mind what I wrote above, I don't know what to say to this. First of all, we never asked any money for multiplayer. The price you pay for the game is for what it offers at that moment. Secondly, Derail Valley is heavily discounted for early buyers, and has been since launch, until basic features and stability issues are resolved. Only with the next update, Simulator, it will reach its true price, as we've announced several times in the past.
Any features and content added on top of that should be seen as bonus. We did ask for people to spread the word, and this has allowed us to add those additional features and content. And that's exactly what we're doing. Still working on the game at the highest possible pace, investing everything back into development, and adding those things one by one. I really don't see how any of this could have been done differently.
I understand the wish for Derail Valley to be more than it is. I wish it too. But not everything can be done at once. Please be patient. Not everything can be perfect either. Please be grateful for what there is already. Not everything will go according to plan. Please be open to change of plans. We've sacrificed a lot to get this game to where it is now and aren't even stopping.
I've deleted another post that contributed nothing useful. I'm locking the thread at this point, as all that needed to be said was said.
