Did you try modifying the settings (e.g. item hold type from continuous to click)? That might help with the items falling out.
We dread this limitation too, however it's because Derail Valley input system was made before Index and SteamVR 2.0 existed, and upgrading would make the game incompatible with Oculus Store. This is something we want to work on in the long run, but there are currently other priorities that need to be sorted first.
few times to get in right mode, won't work if just holding trigger to hold object.
I originally had it on click with the Vive wands and changed to continuous for the Index controllers because it's more natural with the grab action. But I've since reverted to click and using the triggers instead of grab to interact with everything and the issues are gone.
That's understandable. The current input system works ok, it's just not ideal for the Index. Even so the game is still playable and a lot of fun.
