The yard designations (B, C, D, etc.) are typically in order of appearance on the overview map, no particular meaning there.

S stands for Siding, usually empty cars are put on these for storage or whatever else. O stands for "out" aka a departure track where cars will be sent out. i stands for "in" or an arrival track where you will most likely be dropping cars off at from a job that arrives at one of the places. The numbers tell you what number siding it is in the yard and the letter at the front tells you what yard it is in. I've noticed B usually is transfer yards, E is military, C is loading or unloading and G is storage. D normally is passenger stations which don't have a use yet.

thanks for that. taking notes will be easier now i think
since it is assigned...
does it check which tracks are occupied when generating or at printing a shunting job?
and:
does the game check where the cars are when generating or printing the job?

Jobs are generated every time you enter the area or restart the game. Yes, the game checks for correct tracks and cars have always space on arrival track, without (!) the loco.

IIrc if you walk away like 3km you exit the town area. This may have changed since overhauled.

ah thanks. i think i will experiment then :D

The game doesn't, however, check if you moved the cars before accepting the job. That leaves you free to shunt things around to your liking without messing anything up, or lining up a job before accepting it to make getting the time bonus easier. Though it's indication of where to pick up the cars would obviously be wrong after you moved them.
