Celestial brush not working on controller

I'm using an Xbone controller which has no issues with any other game.. all the other game controls work but for whatever bizarre reason the right bumper/celestial brush just isn't responding.

Does anyone have a clue what is going on & how I can fix it?

I tested with DS4, and although it wasn't detected at first, it worked fine the second time I launched the game while mashing buttons. It shows all the button prompts correctly in menus, settings, in-game and so on. Everything worked fine.

The only thing I can think of, is maybe you didn't "unlock" that ability yet? You can't use it at the very beginning of the game, you have to go through the tutorial area. At some point you reach a river that you can't cross, so you have to go up the nearby hill and that's where you learn the brush technique.
