You play as "Chibiterasu", the apparent offspring of Amaterasu. The game reprises many familiar areas, but adds some new ones (and some new brush powers too). Areas are partitioned into smaller zones than the original, but this is the DS we're talking about here. The story doesn't feel quite as grand as the original (in fact outright reprises it, darkness taking over the world and you have to stop it, etc.) but still epic in scope.
Though, if they decide to remake okamiden, I would be pleased, though I wish they add more content and new areas other than the locations in okami.
