It protects you from fire, very useful against some enemies and especially the fireballs that fly all over the place the 2nd time you battle Orochi

You don't need to avoid fire attacks at all. I believe the flame spiders are an exception cause you need a separate brush technique for those

You don't take fire damage with it equipped, however you still get knocked back by the fire spiders and what not.

If you take a closer look at the fire spiders when you jump on them without freezing them, they spin around really fast knocking you off, and most likely being the thing that actually damages you.

I don't remember taking fire damage when fighting monsters/ boss that uses fire. So yah its not useless.
