Are old weapons useful

For instance, do you use Divine retribution even after getting Infinity judge? I think I wasted gold dust.

I use it as my sub after getting snarling beast. I dunno if using a gold dust on it will affects its counterattack, so I probably wasted mine too..

Each new weapon tier is more powerful than the last, even if you used gold dust. So yeah, old weapons are useless.
There is enough gold dust to be used on every weapon, although the last two gold dusts can only be obtained after the point of no return at the end of the game.

Yeah, it's best to not upgrade the early weapons first in that case.
However, this game is easy enough so you don't have to worry about it, unless on demon gate trials, where stronger weapons are really useful.

prioritize your playstyle if you want to use gold dusts
(IE do you like Shield/mirror, Rosary/Jewel, or Sword)

since you get just as much gold dust as weapons you can power them all whenever you use them, and sometimes its better to use a weaker weapon as a main wepon becaue there are 2 shotgun firing beads in the game and they are top notch as secondary weapons way stronger then the 3 holy instruments, the second to last bead as a sub weapon is the strongest Instrument in the game
