Is this like a Zelda game?

Yep, it usually is compared to Zelda. There's a big overworld with a bunch of dungeons where you solve some puzzles, fight enemies and usually a boss, and you unlock new abilities that you can use both for fighting and exploration (some areas are only accesible once you unlock a new ability like in metroidvania games).

I'll level with you, this is objectively my favourite game of all time. The only flaw i would give it would be that it's a bit too easy in general. The dungeons are incredibly interesting to explore, but they don't offer a huge challenge. If you've played Zelda: Twilight Princess you could compare them to the Arbiters Grounds. They're really cool but don't offer any headscratching moments.

That aside, the entire journey through the game surpasses any Zelda i've played, and i ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love Zelda games. The characters have a lot more personality, the visuals are groundbreakingly stunning even by todays standards, the combat and bush mechanics are creative and interesting, and the game is LONG. It has a habit of making you think you've completed it and then it adds a whole new map area.

Honestly i would say that if you've a fan of the Zelda experience then you should absolutely play this game. It's quite slow to start off and there's a lot of dialogue, but once you break out of the starting village it really opens up.

I would strongly disagree with your view of issun. The back and forth between him and Ammy is very entertaining. Navi was completely void of personality, while Issun actually has a lot of character.

I also didn't mind Issun at all, but then again I've never been bothered by any side character that was otherwise considered annoying by most people. I guess it'd be better if he didn't explain right away what you have to do in a given quest, as I remember he liked to almost immediately "point you in a right direction". Otherwise I agree with DarkEco, he was an entertaining character for me.

well if u love him, that's fine
IMHO i could tolerate navi more

as is, okami is just short of perfection with him there

Issun had the dual role of being the speaker of the heroes, as well as the tutorial character. Thankfully he did have personality, unlike Fi from Skyward Sword. I could tolerate Navi, but Fi was too much.

The game has one major flaw.

You cannot skip cutscenes.

Okami has one element that I find very innovative in its gameplay: the brush. It ties everything through the whole game and I think the way you use it for battles and solving puzzles very creative and dynamic. Besides, the game has such a beautiful artwork and music. Sometimes a bit of "humor" involving Issun.

Worth checking out.
