Game suitable for 5 year old?
I know it says Teen... but was just wondering what are some examples or scenes in the game that make it Teen?

Reference to alcohol, as well as some busty ladies. Nothing past what you'd see in an old Loony Toons cartoon. As beautiful as the art style is, it is also very low-detail, so those busty ladies hardly have anything noteworthy to see.

Thanks a lot!

Went and looked up a video of the worst I can remember. Personally, I'd find the boss in the intro cutscene more scary as a 5 year old than this video being "too much." You're the parent though, and you know your kid.

Well, the game isn't exactly very difficult, but at the same time I'm not sure a 5 year old could handle it, especially since it's a rather long game with a pretty big world to explore. And a looot of reading, since the game is pretty dialog heavy and all the characters only talk in random noises.

When it comes to examples that make the game rated for Teens - the store page lists "Bad Language and Violence", but honestly I don't recall any bad language, and the violence is pretty cartoony. Really, I would be more concerned with these two female characters and
how your companion Issun likes to comment on their... feminity (img1[i.ytimg.com], img2[pbs.twimg.com]), but even that isn't much of an issue IMO.

Still, even though I don't recall anything inappropriate, it might not be right for a kid that young.

Ah ok thanks for the info... i thought the voices would be in japanese and he could follow along since he is bilingual.... Maybe it wont be as fun for him as i thought. :(

I played a ton of games when I was 5, regardess of how good they were for my aptitude. He might just like running around in the wolf game and never really get far.

Voices are all just mumbly giberish. Not Japanese at all. It works well for 2005 limitations, but he'll probably need help with reading if he's serious about progress.

Edit: I watched a 4 year old beat a boss in Cuphead the other day, so he may follow directions well

Yeah i thought he would love running around as the wolf and maybe fighting some easy stuff... i assumed i would have to help him with some platforming and bosses and now reading to him if i do pick it up.

Yeah, I remember playing Mortal Kombat II at that age, not exactly an appropriate game for a kid ;) Or Another World, hellishly difficult game that I couldn't finish at that time. Mortal Kombat didn't turn me into a murderer, and I eventually finished Another World and had a lot of fun replaying "that one cool game from my childhood", and Okami is a cool game indeed :)

I guess there's plenty of fun things for a 5 year old to do, even in the beginning of the game. There's some funny characters that you can mess with, like barking at people (and a dog) to startle them, or digging up turnips so the lady chases you around. Still, hard to tell if he'll like it. It's one of my favourite games, but I think I was ~14 when I first played it.

Yeah I doubt he'll beat the game, but he'll probably have a lot of fun with it.

The game itself is quite easy, but very dialogue heavy and there's no actual voice acting for him to follow, he'd have to read. If you can't help him in that aspect, there's no way he can progress/beat the game. The only really mature things in Okami is alcohol use and some busty ladies but nothing really that bad.

I played it a few years ago on the wii, and (Sort of Spoilers) if I remember correctly, you start coming across a few dead bodies and quite a few ghosts later on in the game. So probably not appropriate for a 5 year old.

ACTUAL SPOILER WARNING: There's also the creepy kidnapping crow people, the implication of virgin sacrifice, and the giant spider lady thing who is just really creepy. And a boss. You were warned.

Over all, it's a great game, but I wouldn't recommend it for a 5-year old.

A 5 years ols would never be able to play this game.

Here's a more suitable game for a 5 years old

Nonsense I started gaming at age 3, Okami is perfectly suitable for any age, whether they complete the game or just run around aimlessly as a wolf.

I remember being afraid of Lockjaws when I first played this game. There might be a few moments where the game gets a little scary but it's not really meant to scare. Besides Rao, there's a scene in the game where you have to steal the clothes of a bathing woman (it's not sexualized), but that's about it. Nothing too bad.

The game was originally made as an homage or tribute to the Legend of Zelda games (the head developer was a big LoZ fan), so it's very similar. A lot of dialog, no voice acting and minor jiggle physics. Some of the puzzles are tricky, though.

But yeah, the Teen rating is mainly for Cartoon Violence (it's ink brush cel-shading graphics), Use of Alcohol (you have to use sake to beat the tutorial boss, for example) and jump scares. If I were you, I'd play it with him, or look up Chuggaconroys Let's Play of the game on YouTube to see if it's something for you/your kid.

As for me, I'll definitely buy it. Greatly enjoyed the PS2 version and since my PS2 died, this will be nice. I suggest getting a controller to play it.
