fishing in the arcade broken?

Whenever an arrow appears and should be pressed i can't seem to get it to work

It's none of the following:
WASD
IJKL
Arrow keys
Numpad

If I remember correctly, the arcade fishing has nothing to do with D-pad nor analog sticks, you only press right buttons on the controller accordingly (DualShock4 - Cross, Circle, Square, Triangle / Xbox - A, B, X, Y). For mouse and keyboard you have to check the mapping, but again game should tell you which buttons to press directly (mine was C - attack/talk, V - change partner, Z - jump, W - location quick access)

but the game is set to use keyboard so that makes no sense. (and yes, i am getting keyboard prompts and not controller prompts)

Did the arrows look like this? Because these are Enter and Backspace keys, not your usual arrow ones.

backspace does make sense then. okay

The default fishing controls are M, F, Backspace, Return. It probsbly makes some sense on a controller, but for keyboard, it is neither convenient nor intuitive.

If you're set on use mouse and keyboard, I suggest temporarily re-mapping those to Numpad 8, Numpad 6, Numpad 4, and Numpad 2 while fishing, just to make it less frustrating.
