Might be better to equip elements that increase gem drops for dungeons and PLAY THE LOTTERY every single time (I got 1st prize on my first try so I could splurge on good equipments at the start of the game). You should usually profit from the lottery.
There was initially an exploit on the Vita version that allowed you to buy and then combine elements before selling them for a huge profit but it got patched out, so you can't do that anymore.
And if I still remember correctly, the grandpa gives you money as well for increasing your virtue stat.
You should have quite an excess of money early-game until late to endgame when stuff starts to jump in prices quickly.
I didn't use the tofu trick, just managing my money and spending on necessary items and equipments let me conserve quite a lot of money to spend on endgame gear. (Although usually when a new set of equipment appears in the shop, I only bought one set of it instead of buying one set for everyone in the party, so that probably helped a lot too)
Oh and, depending on your luck, you might have to spend quite a bit on the gacha items, which is Tokyo Xanadu's version of the collection set items from Trails.
Yeah I am using the lottery and it seems like a good way of making money. I just asked because even if it is by little , I like to make a quick buck without grinding. It is just fun for me. Being able to buy everything after is also a plus. The dungeons seem to give a really good amount of money though just like you said.
For the gacha machine I just save and load. I did that for Zwei Ilward Insurrection, the gambling mini games in other trails games and it works here too.
Dude I just asked, whether I need it or not doesn't matter. I love money tricks like the one in FF9, CS1. Or stuff like fishing in Trails games and how you can get some of the best stuff in the game chapter 1. For example in Ao no Kiseki you can fish gold salmon as soon as you get the fishing pole and not only does that fish is super profitable but it can also get you EP Cut 3. Or the tiger heart and Crimson eye from SC. For example I have already gotten 4 Fie plushies at the arcade in this game and thanks to the fishing mini game it took me less than an hour.
Tricks/stuff like these I just adore because its not grinding. One of my fav things about trails for example is how level grinding is not needed at all.
