Try to practice in a safe room with ladders.
The problem is that while the controls screen has a "Move Up" input, it doesn't do anything. You can climb down a ladder, but you can't climb up it; you have to jump instead. And when fighting that level 2 boss, it requires seemingly millisecond-accurate timing to get the jump just right, which you have to do many, many times.
The second problem is that in order for your bullets to reach the boss, you need to be on the far right edge of the ladder, almost falling off, which makes it easy to fall off accidentally (and once you fall, forget it, you can't get back on the ladder in between the laser beams, so you have to load your saved game).
Considering this was only the level 2 boss, I'm questioning whether I want to continue, as I anticipate the bosses will only become more difficult, and this one was already nearly impossible to defeat.
