As for single-player content, it's decent - there are various modes, an arcade mode, and a VN-like anime story with a plot on the level of a dog's fever dream.

There are also different discords dedicated to each character, but look for them yourself. I remember somewhere here there was a list with all the discord links.
I avoid the discord servers because most of them are locked down. They think every new account that joins is a troll and you can't participate at all if you don't have a cell phone number. They also refuse to update the old wikis with new information so most of that is several years out of date and anything they've gathered since about 2018 will be lost to the sands of time whenever the servers on discord get deleted or the service goes offline. A lot of people claim this will never happen. I guess they haven't lived long enough to see it happen to ever major chat service.
The good news is this game got a netcode update a few years back and the netcode is excellent. You can play with people on the other side of the world and it's usually playable as long as ping times are around 300ms. I do see a few new players come and go so you'll likely be able to find someone on your level eventually. I would highly suggest finding a local friend and either playing together at home or buying them a copy of the game too.
This is the only really decent PC port. The other games are worth buying for the story but they all suffer from a few problems that are usually easy to work around. People don't really play them online anymore though. You should also just go ahead and install the improvement mod if you're on Windows. Last I checked it didn't work on proton. But you might be able to get it going with later proton updates or if you can figure out the correct .dll it needs.
