do you need to play the other games in the series to know whats going on in the story?

People are wrong. Honestly, you can play all the games in order and if you don't pay enough attention, you might STILL be kinda lost on the finer details of what the hell is going on.

Depends on the game and mode. Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift have individual character stories, while Chronophantasma and Centralfiction have a more linear story. And then you have arcade modes in every game (CF has three Acts, so three arcade modes for most characters).

There is a short recap that explains the basic story line across the past games thus far. mostly centered on Ragna's story. there is also a kind of index in game that explains almost everything from characters to in universe terms and lore as well if your wondering what a character's 'deal' is. in truth I started BB from continuum shift (I think the 2nd game in the series) and that game did a good job covering all the important bits of the story despite not playing the 1st game and it seems that CF does something similar as well. if your willing to read and listen to MGS length cutscenes and text walls then am sure CF will catch up you to speed just fine.

Continuum Shift Extend has Calamity Trigger Reconstruction, which is a full recap of Calamity Trigger's True End. Chronophantasma and Centralfiction have very short summaries that barely act as memory refreshers for returning players, newcomers won't get much at all.

Yeah, actually, you can start from Continuum Shift, sure. Correct. Not because of how good the recap there is, but because of how confused you were after Calamity Trigger. Game basically explained nuffin in Calamity Trigger. Because that's just how it rolled. Things happened. Deal with it.

So just skipping it with a recap in Continuum Shift is a nice way to save time.

But let me say this.

You could straight up combo Inferno Divider into Inferno Divider in Calamity Trigger. How about that? Sounds good? Sounds good to me! CT is worth playing for the memes, really.

I know this has been answered already but I don't believe you have to to understand most of it. The biggest hurtle is the jargon is insane and will have to use the in-game library to understand what events and things are being talked about.

I will say starting with continium shift is a must if you want to understand this whole story. I did everything in order and still has come out a bit lost. never mind that theres also two VN prequel for explaining the origin of yuuki and Es called Xblaze embryo, and Lost memories.
