Do I need to play the previous games to understand story?
Do I need to play the previous game sto understand story? I've played the previous ones, but ever so briefly. Will I be completely lost if I play this latest installment during story?

Well, you'd be advised to play BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend at least - it has a summary of the True Ending of BlazBlue Calamity Trigger.

Centralfiction has a short recap of Chrono Phantasma.

So if you're dead set on getting through the story asap, you should play those two. But honestly, I'd advice you to play through all of them. All games of the series have pretty damn fun story modes (CSE has the best in my opinion, but that might be just me).
The only REAL downside on skipping Calamity Trigger in favour of going straight to CSE - you'll miss a lot of characters backstories and motivations, if you just watch the recap. And a lot of character relationships. Recap doesn't really capture that. So it might take some time to figure out what's what in CSE.

You can watch the anime too if you want to catch up on the main story.
:)
I... Wouldn't say that it's a great idea. Anime is sub par and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone at all (as a raging fanboy of the series, that was ready to watch literally ANYTHING, it was too dissapoiting even for me). Alter Memory is unfocused, extremely confusing, has low quality animation, completely needless episodes that are there to just fill the air-time (and it's a short anime too), is even worse at explaining the plot of CT then CSE is.

I suggest you play the game chronologically. calamity trigger and continuum shift sets up for chronophantasma. and centralfiction is the closing chapter to ragna's story. If you have to skip, I would skip the first game since continuum shift gives u a pretty good summary, but if it were me, i wouldn't skip any because you definitely get attached to many characters.

I agree with Tako... =D

I only played Continuum Shift on PS3, & I loved Ragna & Tawkaka the most, & the story was really fun to enjoy, & that Art Style was very different from what i'm used to, & very well done... The Story is great, if you skip all of the Story for just the Game Play or whatever you skip the story for, I can't garentee you will enjoy the Game as much... As you would have... =D

But I had hopes of getting the full franchise cheap over STEAM trying to catch the full story, & hoping the 2 last Games were actually worth buying, but when I purchased them, it seems none of them even started on my PC, & until I can play them, they are just sitting there, ~_~

I've tried everything to get even 1 of the Games to start, & so far, no luck, :(

If there was even an Error code, I would at least have some form of something to go off of, but as far as I know, there was no Error Code, so I have no idea what is even causing the Games to not run... & all the fixes i've tried that people have given me, don't even work, ~_~

Oh i was dissapointed with the anime too but I just mean it gives you a basic idea what to expect (story and character wise) if you never been into blazblue before.

Well, that too.
Also, I respect that Protoman art in your profile.
Hope rides alone? :3

Protoman has always been alone
*whistles*
My first BlazBlue game was ChronoPhantasma on the PS Vita. I did both the recap with Rachel explaining to Ragna what happened, and the Litchi sections, and felt like I had a basic understanding on what was happening. I think I might go back eventually and burn through the BBCT and BBCSE stories if I find the time, but these games' stories take a while to get through. I think getting ChronoPhantasma Extend and Centralfiction can be enough, but if you have the willpower and time, just go for all the games chronologically. It's honestly an enjoyable ride, but make sure you take your time with it, no matter what games you choose to play.
