Wargame: European Escalation
Leopard 2A4 and M1A1 Abrams Gun Contrast
I have not bought this game yet (but I'm going to for Christmas)
And I was looking on the wiki about the stats for the Leopard 2's and M1 Abrams' lines.
I noticed that the Leopard 2A4's gun has 1 more AP power (10) than the M1A1 Abrams' gun (9).
Why is this when they have the exact same gun (120mm Rheinmettal Germany makes the gun and the USA buys it for the Abrams) and fire the exact same ammo (Sabot or HEAT).
If both tanks have the exact same gun and exact same ammo why are the AP powers different? Just a weird difference that I noticed and apparently can't comprehend...
Please if you know some reason for this difference please tell me because I'm having a difficult time understanding the difference...

..humm.. M1A1 might have the L/44 (5,28meters) and the 2A4 (Upgraded?!) has the L/55 (6,6meters). The swedish STRV121/122 has the L44. Not in all cases is a longer barrel better, but in this case it should give cca 200m/s faster round. Thus giving more Joule when hitting the target.. An other thing could be that the M256 (L44) is licence built in the US.. Anz az wee all now it, zee Zerman Zteel iz zee bezt jaaaaa.. =) Sorry for not helping much, and thanks for giving me headache.. =) Anyone else with a better explanation.. =)
Yes, you hit the nail on the head. M1A1 uses L/44, and only the Leo2A4 ingame uses the longer L/55.
Oh ok, interesting how I heard they have the identical guns on history channel...
I am not really that knowledgeable on this matter, but I did look around the internet. What I found was that the M1A1 does not use the 100% exact same gun, but a modified one.

“...the M1A1's major asset was to be the German Rheinmetall 120mm smoothbore cannon. US studies on the gun concluded it was overly complex and expensive by American engineering standards, so a version using fewer parts was developed (such as a new coilspring recoil system, instead of an hydraulic one, like on the Rheinmetall 120mm L44), and designated the 120mm M256 gun. Along with the new gun came a number of associated changes to the fire control system. “

This change is also reflected in the wiki. The game's wiki lists the gun for M1A1 as M256 and Leopard 2A4 as L44.

I am no tank expert, so I cannot comment how well the game actually reflects these modifications.

Yes I know about the different recoil system, but the Leo 2A4 uses an L/44 gun just look at the stats (I know it's on the game maybe it's different in real life I don't know). But now I have found out about "balancing" so that answers my question thanks guys!

Hmm, I think its because they are using A5/6 stats for the Leopard 2 (which has the L55) instead of the L44 the A4 has. Or they're assuming that these A4's got refitted at some point.

It could also be an attempt at game balancing as to make the Abrams and Leopard 2 be balnced realtive to all of the the other tanks of the same class and tech.
