So, how do I do that?
This is really frustrating.
Not sure if there are control keys assigned ot the speed options, but if so they didn;t appear in the options menu.
You can't comletely pause the game, but by setting one hot-key to a ridiculously slow speed (e.g. 0.01 in my case) everything is running so slowly its almost the same thing.
I also set another hot-key to 0.5 (which is basically half speed) and this compensates for the accelerated real time used by the MP community. I find at this reduced speed tanks, trucks and infantry look like they are moving at the correct scale speed, and it reduces the need to keep pausing the game.
However, CheatEngine seems to do the job and is reasonalby easy to set up. You just have to remember to switch back to normal speed for the cut-scenes as it slows everything down not just the game.
I was worried about the safety of this download and was careful to DL it from the official site, and I passed my AV scanner over it before installing. Not that, that is a guaratee, but so far I've not noticed any problems.
BTW: I saw a weird thing yesterday.
I was watching an ALB lets play and the guy was doing a special video to shows the beauty of the game and its units, and he kept pausing and slowing down the game to do it. But what was weird was that he seemed to have a speed control bar in the bottom centre of his hud that let him choose the game speed by clicking on buttons.
I've never seen anything like that in ALB, so I'm wondering of there is some other solution to this problem out there that we don't know about. I post a link to the video if I can find it, unfortunately I do watch a lot of lets plays.
Found it:

Take a look at the pop-up hud that appears around 7:45. It seems to have a pause button featured.
