Relationship/Marriage Help for New Players
Alright! So, after extensive amounts of time playing this game coupled with lots of research, I think I'm ready to share some knowledge I have about the relationship mechanic of the game. Do keep in mind that some of this information may seem obvious to some, but not some others (especially if you're like me), and I've not seen anywhere this information is explicitly stated. Feel free to comment any information I missed that you feel is important, or correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure to have some misinformation, so feedback is greatly appreciated!

Music Notes

  • As you may have noticed, every NPC of this game has a set of 5 empty quarter notes in their dialogue box when you talk to them. This represents your relationship with this person.

  • As you talk to them, give them gifts, and complete their quests, their music notes will slowly fill up to show a stronger bond forming between you and that person.

  • Gifting them items they like on their birthday will increase their bond with you faster.

  • A full five notes are required to marry someone.

    Relationship Events

  • For the first 4 notes, there are relationship building cutscenes associated with those notes when they are filled. (meaning, there is a cutscene that can only be triggered after one note has been filled, one after two, and so on until the fourth. However, Tabitha seems to be an exception to this rule, having only three cutscenes with one that triggers at one note and two that trigger at three notes.

  • These relationship building cutscenes not only need a certain level of friendship to trigger, but also have a time and place too!

  • All four cutscenes must be triggered in order to marry someone.

  • If you are having trouble triggering a cutscene, try exploring different shops and areas of the island you don't visit often. Some of the shops have custscenes, but their owners are rarely in them to allow you to enter them and trigger the cutscene (such as with Nova's second note cutscene in the flower shop).

  • If you are just playing the game for the first time and got a person's relationship with you high before triggering their cutscenes, do keep in mind that cutscenes with a specific person will only trigger a week after the last, however, multiple cutscenes with different people can be triggered in the same day.

    Marriage Events

  • Once you have seen all four of your bachelor or bachelorette's cutscenes, AND they have a full five notes, a cutscene with the harvest goddess will trigger and tell you what you need to get married (you also need to have finished the storyline as well).

  • You will Need the biggest house upgrade and a bluebird feather. The bluebird feather is what you must present to your love to propose to them.

  • The bluebird will appear to you at night (after 7:00pm) on the beach and give you the feather but only after you have seen a cutscene that triggers when you wake up the day after the harvest goddess' cutscene triggers.

    Requirements of Marriage

  • Unfortunately, the grinding doesn't stop there. In order to get married, you need to talk to Melanie so that she can make a wedding dress and tuxedo for the wedding. This will require Great Cotton Candy Wool AND Great Silky Fur, so must have a Silky Donkey and a Cotton Candy Sheep. Getting a specific variant of their item is frustrating, so keep the animals' love of you around 4 notes, and save before harvesting their product. That way if you don't get the right product, you can re-load your save and try again. Also keep in mind that Silky Donkeys take the longest to mature of the farm animals, so you'll want one as soon as possible (I believe they mature after an entire in-game month).

  • In addition, you'll need adamantite ore for the quest items to make your wedding attire. Which means you'll need a tier 3 hammer AND you must have gotten to level 61 in the mines (level 61 is the first checkpoint layer that you can get adamantite ore. The ore veins you mine should be blue).

  • As a final note, your marriage will take place a week after you give the quest items to Melanie so that she can make a wedding dress and tuxedo.

    Additional Tips

  • You want to make sure you trigger a bachelor or bachelorette's relationship cutscenes as soon as possible once you meet the note requirement. If you do what I did, it will take you up to four weeks to trigger all of their cutscenes if you surpass the note requirement and forget about the cutscenes.

  • Try not to force things too much in this game; its much more enjoyable to take things at a natural pace.

  • If you need to speed up the day, go to the mines, enter, and immediately exit to add two hours to the in-game time.

  • Pretty much everybody in this game loves poinsettias, which are the red leafy plants that grow wild in fall.

  • Try to take note of times and days of the week where you can find certain people. As a general rule of thumb, shops open at 10:00am.

  • Be pacient.

Regarding events and and marriage, it either isn't true that every character has four cutscenes, or it isn't true that you need to see all of them to get married. I married Tabitha after seeing only three events with her, and I haven't heard of anyone knowing about a fourth scene for her. Either she is an exception or you don't need to get all the scenes to marry.

Thanks for the info! I'll adjust my post as necessary, however it is very possible she is an exeption, as from my experiences thus far the other bachelors and bachelorettes still have four cutscenes, with the fourth cutscene being the love confession. You must have the love confession scene to marry someone, and its always the last cutscene with them. My experience thus far in the game confirms this for Edmond, Nova, and Elise at the very least. However, I still don't know everything (far from it) so, once again thanks for the info, and I'll research it a bit when I have time to clarify.

EDIT: After a little bit of research, I can confirm your findings in that Tabitha has only three cutscenes and does not conform to my above mentioned standards!

Thanks for the explanation. Appreciate it. Do you know how friendship level (afection) affects what the villagers do on your birthday? Do they give you gifts?

To my knowledge, the villagers don't provide gifts. I've gotten a few villagers up to high relationships and never received a gift on my birthday. They just say "Happy Birthday" and carry on their normal business.

Thanks PaladinGeorge, appreciate it. I was growing self-conscious. Ha! In all seriousness, I thought I read somewhere they did, but it might have been an older HM game.

I wasn't expecting to see relationship scenes for same sex people. I know you can't marry same-sex, but is my game bugged? I'm playing as "the boy" and getting cutscene/dialog events for Dean and Cyril too. Is that normal?

Personally, I haven't had time to test that. However, the first few cutscenes I would say are more about friendship and less about romance. The final cutscene at 5 notes is the "romantic" one, so if you can get that cutscene that would be rather odd.

Yeah, they seem pretty platonic.

I must add that I too have had relationship cutscenes with male characters, but the male characters I have gotten up to high friendship haven't triggered their romantic cutscene.
