I tried kegling mutations during fall, but failed.

Kegling melons mutate from cannonballs in fall at high elevation. So you'll need to mutate 30 cannonballs from watermelons in summer with peach compost, sell them to unlock the seeds, then buy the seeds from Sam and plant in the fall at the field under the mine.

So can someone confrim how to grow these reliably?

From what I can tell it's very rare and needs to be fertilized with melon blend and to be planted like a checkerboard to mutate as I have been unable to get any to mutate if they were grown in a block.

I did get one to mutate next to a different crop and a wall.. But none mutated if they were touching another cannonball..

If you use the guide here, read carefully. For Keglings, Cannonballs need to be planted on Dry Soil not Patchy.

My year 4 fall has fog on the 2, 13, 14, 19, and 24th with a storm on the 11th. The harvest moon festival on the 15th makes it a 9am-5pm day.
You gotta plant cannonball seeds on the mountaintop in a checkerboard pattern but they need good fertilizer. The problem is, to get the best fertilizer in the game, you need kegling seeds to get great keglings. So to get the cannonballs to mutate you need some good retention agents and watermelon super blend. Especially with fog/storms. I'm so mad. I planted 150 seeds and didn't get a single one because of the fog and storm. I used watermelon super, normal fertilizer,, and retention ex. Not enough...
