Depends on if you are curious about thier stories and are a generous person who likes giving people thier favorite stuff.

Elise and Bastian unlock cooking recipes, Dean gives you fertilizer recipes and unlocks them for sale at Carol's shop, Cyril teaches you bait recipes, and the deities can increase your hearts. It's really not that hard to befriend people, just give a gift if you happen to see them. You can befriend everyone with simple, easy to acquire items like seashells, softwood lumber, wildflowers, and crops. And virtually everyone likes Poinsettias and Pretty Seashells.
