We are trying to find some solution with Valve like changing the emoticons images.
It might be worth noting in this situation that every time someone on Steam has responded to the DMCA, Furie fails to follow up on it (see: Vaping Simulator where after a 14 day silence on his part the game was put back on Steam - it got removed later because he really did violate copyright with another rick and morty game but hey)
Honestly I don't know much about copyright law but considering it's a custom png icon I'd be surprised if it isn't classed as a derivative work or something. But if you are going to change the emote image, you could at least make it something cool like troll face or some other amusing meme that won't get taken down by a crazy guy whilst still retaining the emotes value to some extent.
You don't make any money with cease and desist letters and dcma take downs. Money won in the one case that went to a law suit was donated in it's entirety to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
