window mode with dxwnd
only a hint, the game had no native window mode, but with the dxwnd tool you can force a window mode.

you need dxwnd:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

1. run the dxwnd.exe as admin (or admin rights; you know, right click/properties/compatibility/run as admin)
2. start the game, go in the config menu @ start and set the window resolution you want
3. exit the game
3.go in the game direction (...)\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Next BIG Thing) drag an drop the "the next big thing.exe" in the dxwnd window
4. config for the game @ dxwnd (right click and modify):

-main tab:
activate "do not notify on task switch" (otherwise the game crashes every time you tab or something)
activate "run in window"
under position notife the window resolution (W = wide, H=hide), you have activate in the game (example i play with 1280x720, so W=1280, H=720)

-DirectX tab:
directX Version hook set on directX 10
emulation set on hybrid mode

all other stuff is deffault

now you can run the game (out of dxwnd (double click) or from desctop icon, or from steam, is all working (steam overlay and so on), BUT you have to run dxwnd first and every time you want play the game again (so when you close dxwnd, save the config).

Hello, I know it's a old post, while I search about old games on Steam with DxWnd, I noticed your post that mentions you even can enabling steam overlay with DxWnd, how did you do that?! No matter how I try setting in DxWnd, I still can't open steam overlay while in game.

well, its from 2017...i think steam had many patches, so one of them broke the combination dxwnd and steamoverlay with my settings.

but for what you need steam overlay, when you use window mode?

So there's a old game on Steam I want to make it "steam remote play", but without steam overlay means that you can't use steam remote play properly as well. And there's a tiny application that lets you force remote play together any game you have in your steam library including non-steam ones.

RemotePlayWhatever [github.com]

I also read that you can force Steam Overlay by using dgVoodoo2, so I tested it with other old games on steam, and it worked, remote play as well. (steam remote play + dgVoodoo2)

But now the problem is the game that I want to play is binding with Dxwnd, and it caused that can't enable steam overlay.
