That's terrible if true.
Its not really something to be disabled to allow you to use this online (or offline) or whatever. Its data collection.
In the Resource window under Main > Open Properties > General there is an option called "Allow Anonymous Game Statistics" that is enabled by default and only able to be disabled by paying customers.
What that does is collects data from your system and sends it off to YoYoGames. No idea who all else they send it off to or who all they sell it to. No idea where the information gets stored or what middlemen it passes through on the way either.
Heres the big annoyances though...
1 - It never actually lets you know that its doing it in the first place. If you didn't dig around in that obscure location for the option or research whether there is any hidden data collection you'd never know about it.
2 - You can't disable it for GMS2 entirely. You disable it on a per project basis. Everytime you make a new program (or often when an update occurs) it gets re-enabled. To disable it you have to load a project and since its enabled by default it will already collect and send information off prior to you getting to disable it. So even if you do disable it for one project it'll collect and send data when you fire up the next project and go to disable it. So they'll always be getting something from at some point.
3 - Heres the real big one. It doesn't just collect information as you use GMS2 to code. It also collects data, unannounced, from anyone who uses a project you made with GMS2. So if you make a game and give it to a friend they will, unknown to them, be having data from them collected and sent off to who all knows where. It never actually states anywhere whether or not turning of that "allow anonymous game statistics" thing disables this end-user data collection or not.
The ultimate thing about this though... if a program you made collects data from someone, even if you didn't know it does, you're legally responisble. So if someone uses your program in a country that has laws against data collection, especially if its unannounced, you are in violation of their laws and they could take legal action against you.
So yeah... data collection is why you can't use GMS2 offline. YoYo wants that information. Because information is money and the only person legally accountable will end up being you, their paying customer. So no harm done.
This might be a deal breaker for me. I've been almost pulling the trigger on a purchase, it's on my wishlist but now I'm not sure.
When you spend hundreds of hours making a game, coding the details, you obviously want complete control over the functionality and every aspect of operation and performance of the game. You want complete ownership and responsibility of the product you have made. When "secret" internet connections are established and undeclared information sent off to who knows where, this is when tough questions should be asked, and when YoYo should be responding.
