Oh, about the topic. I hated hydrocity in sonic 3 and knuckles, when I was a kid I never was able to beat it for myself. But now I like this version quite a lot. I think that makes more sense than the original, the layout I mean. It feels harder to get lost and the gimmicks are in the right places. I prefer the bosses too.
fair enough.
Including this one as an amusing contrast to the rest of the post:
Astonishingly this topic has never covered this.
The bubble visual and controls and the obstacle navigation is also taken from an old game. Specifically the 8-bit version of Sonic 2, as it was a prominent feature in Aqua Lake Zone.
Combining one legacy zone with the mechanics and themes of another was something Mania had a pattern of doing. Other obvious examples include Oil Ocean which used both the falling-sand-jumping and the countdown hazard (including the levers and their sound effects) from Sandopolis, and Stardust Speedway which used both the hill pulley things and the run-around-the-column descents from Marble Garden.
While it's true that this series is about platforming, it's also a combination of speed and platforming - knowing the mechanics and level design the best you can so you can easily breeze through them on repeat playthroughs. It's a balance of these two elements that make Sonic what it is. Plus it's more satisfying earning speed through skillful play over just having that speed handed to you.
Oh yeah, the 8-bit Sonic 2 references and mechanics were really cool. Seeing the "trapped in a bubble" thingy in the Genesis style was sweet. What I was referring to by "virtually the same" was in graphics and soundtrack. The stage feels VERY different than the original, I'll give you that. But it looks and sounds nearly exactly the same, which is a bit of a shame imo.
The only classic sonic game that I played was sonic 3 and knuckles when I was a kid (one of my first games). And I only got to hydro city XD, I was hours in that level, dying every time. When I got this game and I got to this hydro city, it felt almost the same to me, just easier to navigate.
And that's good. I mean, I had to get to my 30s to pass the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hydro city...
But yeah, when you guys says that it's very different from the original, I have to disagree. I even remember some shortcuts that apply here too...
