either way is perfectly fine, this is a game for newcomers and people who've been playing since the original

As this is a homage to the old sonic games, I myself highly suggest you play the original games.
I don't think it's a bad decision to play sonic mania first but just my opinion

It's completely fine either way, like Pootalott said it has homages to the old games but it's not bad without remembering the old zones. It's also not any harder than the older games (Might actually be a bit easier)

The biggest flaw of the game - reused zones - is completely nonexistent when it's your first Sonic game. I recommend starting with Mania, especially because it's relatively easy and refined to the max.

I played Sonic 2 on an emulator a few years back and...I found it to be pretty frustrating, and didn't enjoy it much past the first two zones. If it wasn't for save states, I never would've made it through the game. Mania was much more enjoyable.

That's probably due to this game's save feature, whereas Sonic 2 forced you to beat it in one sitting with the limited lives you had. You might enjoy Sonic 3 & Knuckles which also had a save feature like this game does.

Sonic 1 is flawed because of being the first (and because Marble Zone and Labyrinth zone are bad).

Sonic 2 is much better (but also less forgiving and it becomes much harder and unfair in the later half).

Sonic CD is good if you like exploration but it's quite short and easy and if you don't seek the good ending it may feel a bit empty.

Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles (which should be done as a single game) is quite lengthy but is really good.

Sonic 2 Mobile is pretty much the definitive way to play it because of that.

Same with Sonic 1 mobile. Both games on mobile even let you play without using the save feature if you prefer to play the old school way.

Still, it's a huge shame those versions aren't even available on modern platforms and are stuck on mobile despite fans begging for them for years now. Rather, SEGA tends to have a similar mindset to 2018 Blizzard when it comes to these rather amazing ports...

With ads* don't forget that.

Also touch controls aren't as good as a pad.

It doesn't matter. Mania is basically OG sonic done better, but not as a reboot.

If you really wanna play the OGs, wait for "Sonic Origins". It's basically all the OGs in a collection or something. So I'm hoping they'll give those games the "Mania" makeover. I'd love to experience them with a pixel remaster/recolor, doubled animation frames, save files, etc

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. I DID have Shadow the Hedgehog and Secret Rings, but I barely touched them bcuz Discs suck and Secret Rings control scheme sucked (Sideways WiiMote). So I rly only ever played and finished/completed Adventure 2. Mania is my second Sanic game. I bought Generations but then realized that was a mistake and I shouldn't be touching these games on PC bcuz they're all Botched ports. Mania is the least problematic and the most playable
