can anyone tell me what this symbol means?

I recently started a new save with sonic and tails. Got a chaos emerald in act one of green hill but then failed to get the second chaos emerald in the second act of green hill. Exited out to start over and found under Tail's head there is a small image of a full body of sonic with a X2 next to it. To the left of that is sonic's head which I know indicates my life counter. So what does the full sonic mean?

What happens when you get a game over anyway? You just get booted to the beginning of the zone, and get another 3 lives?

If you have a continue, you can restart from the last checkpoint with three extra lives instead of the beginning of the zone. Your score still resets to zero, though.

Getting a game over sends you to the start of the zone, using a continue puts you at the last checkpoint
