Does this take cheap shots like in Sonic 2?
Where you have to memorize where hazards are, because there's no way to avoid them otherwise? The first Sonic game didn't have that much of that.

You mean is it like the Marble Garden Zone? No, it isn't.

It's been a long time since I played 3, but I think you're talking about the same thing. I love the first Sonic because you have time to see and react to enemies and other perils, negating the need for blind trial and error.

It never gets anywhere near as bad as Metropolis Zone from Sonic 2, but there's still a bit of that present here and there, which honestly, the same can be said about pretty much every Sonic game ever made - even the best Sonic games have moments of cheap shots that you can't predict until you've replayed it multiple times.

BTW even Sonic 1 had those robots that come out of the ground in Labyrinth Zone that are incredibly hard to see coming on your first run.

I actually never had any problem with those things. I always saw their drills poking out.

Sonic 2 ain't hard if you learn the levels.

No cheap shots...or at least none that I can remember. I did play Sonic 2 and that was something I absolutely hated about that game...and I was pleasantly surprised to see Sonic Mania's level design was much improved.

But then there's Metropolis Zone...

Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) was also a drastic improvement over Sonic 2 in that regard, probably because in terms of level design and structure, Sonic 3 didn't feel nearly as rushed as Sonic 2 did.

One level out of the 12 (or more, I didn't count all because Sky Chase + Wing Fortress + Death Egg is basically one big level like Hidden Palace + Sky Sanctuary in Sonic 3&K).

And yet Sonic 3 got rushed. But yeah, one Sonic 3 Zone is equal about 3 Sonic 2 Acts (or just one Zone and a half) in term of length.
