Game won't launch, MGS noise plays.
The Alert noise from Metal Gear Solid plays after attempting to launch the game, and the game does not show up. Any solutions?

The MGS noise is from the Special K program. It's Global Injector (which I assume you use for stuff like the achievement sounds and other game enhancments) was already fickle with Mania, but doesn't seem to work with the new Plus update at all; just disable it before you start up Mania for now.

Special K program? I'm not sure I know what that is, as I have nothing on my computer called that.

Nevermind this post, I was able to alleviate the issue by uninstalling and redownloading the game.

Unless you really don't have a program that resembles this, then I'm not sure what other program you might be using that causes it. This was the case for me and assumed the same for you.

Either way, glad you got it fixed; sorry I couldn't be more help!

Say, that actually looks like an interesting program. I'm gonna check it out. :D

Special K? I know I have Kellogg's Special K for Breakfast but I've never heard of a program called Special K :steamhappy:

Kaldaien's Mod aka Special K is the only thing that makes that MGS sound if you run a game and some error happens, OP must have installed those DLL files to his Mania directory or something. It is the only possible scenario.

I don't really recall installing this program, and reinstalling doesn't help at all. In fact, it seems that the game itself causes the specialk files to be created when I try to boot it, upon which it goes ! and crashes, before booting. Deleting the files that are generated don't help, and just cause them to be recreated again when trying to start the game, lather rinse repeat.

Sounds like you have the global injector of specialk installed on your PC, you need to uninstall that if it is causing problems. That's a user created mod which breaks on some computers, it broke on mine before.

That's the thing, it doesn't show up on my list of installed programs, because I didn't install it. I try deleting the file as installation guides suggest, but then when I boot sonic mania, it generates the files all over again.

To reiterate, before this situation started, I didn't even know what a specialk was. I had to look it up.

That's impossible for the Sonic Mania exe to generate Special K files unless it was on in the background. Go into your documents and see if there is a My Mods folder. Also when you start Mania do you see any OSD on-screen display, the specialK overlay? Do you still crash with Metal Gear Solid sound?

I don't see an overlay of the program, game does not even start at all. It crashes before it starts. And yes, there is a My Mods folder that keeps popping up, and I keep deleting it, but it keeps coming back each time I boot sonic mania.. Also, I noticed an appcache folder in my common folder in steamapps for sonic mania. I tried deleting that too. Keeps coming back.

Try to navigate through documents/mods/specialK and open SKIM64.exe

And uninstall, it might be my mods and the exe might be just SKIM.exe. but you need to run SKIM or SKIM64 to uninstall the mod completely.

if uninstall is not available then delete the documents/mods/specialK folder

File not found: Guess I'll try looking up the programs online, installing it, then uninstalling it.

Are you sure your antivirus isn't eating the game exe? Try white listing it.
