Mods where I can zoom out?
I find these Sonic games unplayable just like jazz jackrabbit. Bumping into everything before you can even react. So is there something equivalent like openjazz for jazz jackrabbit where I can alter the scaling and zoom out? Sonic Mania looks quite nice but I find the gameplay utter trash when I can't zoom out. Thanks.

Pretty sure a mod to increase the aspect ratio is on CNG's Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/CnGMods - but... if you can't handle this game at its current focus, you just need to get better. You're the first person I've ever seen to complain about this. Have you never played a classic Sonic game before?

Yes back in the 90's at a friend's house where I kept bumping into stuff as well and gave up. I don't understand why they put sonic in the centre of the screen. I just can't react in time on high speed before bumping into stuff. Need to get better in this game is like doing dozens of sessions on the same map and remember where you collide with stuff. This time could be severly shortened by changing zoom levels or putting Sonic at the side of the screen instead of middle.

The game would become significantly easier then, as it is obviously balanced around the current "zoom level".

The game should be played slower than its reputation suggests. You should learn to spot places where it's safe to run as fast as you can; the map design usually implies it.

You might just have a really bad reaction time. Again, I've NEVER seen anyone complain of this issue. In fact, this game is WIDER than the original trio. Brad Flick and the other level designers for this game did a wonderful job balancing speed with timing/thought so I don't understand what your issue is if it's not bad reaction time.

Hmm then I probably have a bad reaction time. If the camera was shifted somewhat horizontally or zoomed out a bit I would actually be playing this game.

I'm necroing this thread to say that sonic would just be a better game if it was zoomed out a bit more. Just play fancypants, it does exactly that and is way better at making the speedy gameplay actually fun.

This game *did* zoom it out. The originals were 320x224, Mania/other Retro Engine remakes run at 424x240. A lot wider so you can see what is ahead of you, and one tile taller.

Eyup, that's exactly it. Sonic games hinge on replayablitiy if you want to get good at them and get through levels quickly. Just look up some level maps for this game - they're massive!

Funnily enough, Sonic CD originally had it so that the camera would pan to have your character on the side of the screen a bit so you have more room to see in the direction you're going. Kind of makes me wonder why the Mega Drive trilogy never did the same.

You are supposed to play the level then remember the enemy placement.

Also Mania is the least problematic in this regard since the trap and enemy placement makes it so you wouldn't bump that much into them while going fast.

You need to gain momentum and to gain momentum you know the level by heart. Being fast is a reward for remembering the levels.
