Otherwise, yeah, finding "wonder boy - metroidvania"-like games was a bit easier than this, I admit.

Maybe Earthworm Jim's games ? But it's either some different kind of platformer than a sonic game, as far as I can see...

Freedom Planet 1 & 2 and Spark the electric Jester are the only non-Sonic mentioned titles here with 2D Sonic style gameplay (Bubsy is a bit similar but not worth it imo). You will barely find more titles on Steam.

( I give up comparisons with Rayman series, as for myself, even being pretty good games. )
