Old boss battle wasn't even a fight. Unless you intentionally avoided recollecting rings it was impossible to lose to him because the ring always got stuck near the spikes if I recall.
I dunno, if anything I'm surprised the boss isn't harder for being a slow paced autoscroller boss. The fact the hand can't hurt you when he's flashing after damage just removes most of the risk, unlike how you can jump into the Death Egg Robot and still be hurt by the hand on the recoil.
Both of these are valid strategies that make the boss much easier. What I did was (as sonic) I somehow got behind it and kept bouncing on the weak spot repeatedly, sure if you miss you fall and die but you can avoid the arms and actually beat the boss really quickly this way. I wish I could give a better explanation of what I did but it all happened so fast. I didn't die as many times as others but I did lose two characters and I barely ever lose anyone, so I was still kind of panicked.
