I don't get it
I seriously do not understand what makes Sonic Mania so phenomenal in everyone's eyes. I played it, beat it, didn't like it, and got it refunded. Is it just nostalgia and nothing else? Is that the only reason that everyone thinks this game is the best Sonic game ever?

Let's go over the things i don't like:

Sonic moves too ♥♥♥♥ing fast to avoid something in time. Whenever i go fast, i usually either end up running into a wall, enemy, or spikes. I'm tempted to go through the game while lightly tapping the D-Pad the whole time.

The levels are way too ♥♥♥♥ing big, most of the time. It took me over 9 minutes to even get to Eggman in Flying Battery Act 2.

The level design isn't very memorable, thought that's probably because i move too fast to take a proper look at anything in this game. Even though you're SUPPOSED to go fast in a Sonic game.

What do you hope to accomplish with this thread?
Are you genuinely asking why people like the game, or just trolling?

If you're really asking, consider offering a starting point for a discussion, such as anything specific about Sonic Mania that you did not like, or compare and contrast with any similar game which you do like.
For instance, you have 26 hours in Freedom Planet. Why do you evidently enjoy that game, but not this one? It's a discussion just waiting to happen, and the discussion might elucidate for you why it is that people enjoy Sonic Mania.

As is, your post reads like this: "I personally don't enjoy this game, so is it actually bad and everyone except for me is a gullible rube with a nostalgia boner?"
No one wants to jump in on something like that.

I mean, if someone said this to you, would you be very eager to reply?
I don't get it
I seriously do not understand how Sonic Mania isn't phenomenal in your eyes. I played it, beat it, and loved it. Is it just being bitter and contrarian and nothing else? Is that the only reason that you think this game isn't worth playing?

I didn't mean to come across like that. I'll try to fix this.

They were neither arguing against or for the OP's opinion, I'd hardly call that "fanboying" when they are merely pointing out how incendiary and hostile it is by nature. Presenting your opinion by suggesting everyone else's is wrong won't garner very many earnest responses.

I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and assume you're literate and capable of understanding what I wrote, but don't understand why I wrote it because the original post now contains more than just this:

Which if he genuinely wanted to know why people like Sonic Mania, wouldn't do much for him as it was simply not conducive to discussion that would give him an answer.

I'm mostly satisfied with the post as it is now, even if I don't agree with any of the reasoning.

My bad, didn't see his post was edited

Agreed, people should always eleborate when they say they don't like a game and specify what they don't like

Personally I think that bigger levels were such an improvement in Sonic Mania, since in the original games the levels are soooo short

The reason I like the game is just simply: it's fun. I played the Genesis games when I was elementary school aged, and fondly remember playing through Sonic 1 and 2 before 3 and Knuckles was released, dying plenty of times, trying over and over to beat those games without using all my continues and eventually not dying once. Why did I love those games over Bubsy, Awesome Possum, and other Genesis platformers? Maybe it was the level of polish, the way the graphics popped, or how you can challenge yourself in fun ways like getting Super Sonic by the time you get to Chemical Plant Act 1 or earlier.

The reasons I enjoy Mania are similar- and don't get me wrong, there were superb platformers back in the original trilogy's time too. Nowadays, Mario is still pulling strong, the Rayman Legends/Origins games are fantastic, and games like Little Big Planet add elements to platformers I've never thought possible.

Sonic Mania is a blast to play because, I think, once you have it's gameplay down, it's possible to run through stages while discovering little routes you may have missed the first time around, or find a chaos emerald ring in an unlikely place. I do wish it did just a little more to add more replayability, like giving local coop a boost in functionality, or online play, but what we have is just fun for me period.

I don't see many cheap deaths in this one, and replying to the OP's post, I think if you get in the habit of rolling and drop dashing more, and expecting spiked enemies sometimes, you can react fast enough to avoid getting hit. The first time I played through the final zone, I didn't die once and got that achievement associated with it on Xbox, now anytime I attempt it I die due to stupid mistakes I can't blame the game for XP

That's funny, since i DO have the habit of drop dashing, rolling, and spindashing often.

Nope, i've played plenty of Sonic games, including the genesis games, and this problem of mine applies to them, too. (didn't like 1, or 3&K, 2 is the best imo).

Watch this to realize just how much you suck at the game.

Don't bash the game if you can't play it at a high level.

How silly of me for criticising a game that i can't master. I guess i should shun criticisms of games that i AM a master at!

I thought sonic was dead, why do people still play this ruined series?
