As for Lava Reef though I always thought it was one of the coolest an underrated zones in Sonic&Knuckles. Good music. Neat transition between acts with one lava, and the other kind of a crystal tech theme. Cool boss. I do feel like it was a bit unnecessary to have it in Mania though. They barely added anything interesting to it. I think they just wanted to have the Master Emerald in the game.

The same two "goo" levels were in Sonic 2 as well. At least they chose the best of them.
