I can't play this game with a keyboard

This is the first 2D sonic game I've owned and I'm having a lot of trouble playing it with a keyboard.

What controller is best for this game? Is the xbox controller any good? I'd be willing to buy a controller because the game seens cool

I play on a keyboard, i use WADS for movement, K jumps, ~ is for Super, P pauses the game.
Is best if you get acustomed to play on a keyboard and a controller. I usually only use a controller when a game uses analog control, so i recommend any other controller because the Xbox controller has the d-pad on an awful place, it was designed dedicated to analog control.

I just use a 360 controller I dug up, even with the joystick it works like a dream. Especially for bonus stages.

What do you have lying around? A lot of them can be configured with Steam Big Picture mode. If you have a PS3 controller, you can look into the Scarlet Crush Productions Toolkit to use it as a Xinput (Xbox 360) controller.

Wired or Wireless? I think the wireless one needs some kind of dongle, but you could probably find it on Amazon. It should work, though. If it does, you can toggle support for it in Big Picture Mode by clicking the gear, then selecting controller settings.

I have a wireless one, and I have the dongle for it. I just plugged it in, I'm gonna try sonic mania and see if the default control scheme is okay

I use a Dualshock 4, and works like a charm.
Actually, I do like to use the D-Pad for the normal gameplay, and the Joystick for the Special Stages.
Also I tried with an wired Xbox 360 and Generic Controller and also works pretty well.

I've been using a wired Xbox 360 controller for all my PC gaming for a while now, at it works perfectly with Mania. The default control scheme seems to be OK.

i'm rather sure that you can redefine keys in the "developer menu" - (use with caution).....grin and bearr for a first playthrough. also look into "xpadder". you may make a decent layout that way.

Was no problem here, as i used a 360 controller, XB1 controls also work fine.

I used the default (Directional keys + WASD for actions) controls and saw no problem. I don't get it but okay.

how do i change my movement to wasd

I use the arrow keys to move, space bar to jump. For this, I also use ctrl to start/pause the game. I might change it.
