Sonic Mania with Controller. Advice needed, please.
Recently downloaded Sonic Mania. Having difficulty with keyboard opps. Thinking in investing in a PC controller, but saw a video that it's a hassle to set up and you need software to convert to controller use. Has this been rectified? Can I just plug and play or is it going to be a faff?

Also, some recommedation for PC Controllers would be good. Thanks.

I have an Xbox USB controller that plugged and played just fine upon first booting of the game.

If you don't care about high price: XBox One Elite Controller is by far the best you can get for PC.

If you don't want to invest that much money: XBox One / XBox 360 Controller. Just like the Elite Controller, it has the best support for PC games, it's basically the official PC Controller.

If you just want a controller only for this game and maybe other 2D Games: really any cheap controller will do, just install Xpadder and you can emulate keyboard keys to any controller buttons. It will work on all games perfectly that don't need analog input.

I've added a keymap for anyone to use on Sonic Mania to Controler Conpanion. Just download the app and download the mapping from the Steam Workshop.
Recent Logitech controller also support Xinput , otherwise get a xbox 360 or xbox one controller.

thanks Kay Jay. I'll think invest in a Xbox controller. I have windows 10 so it should just install automatically. Don't think my budget will stretch to an Elite! I'm not much of a hardcore gamer anyway. (SM is more for nostalgia kick if anything.) Is buying pre-own ok, or would you recommend going for a new device?
The Logitech F series work perfectly as it mimicks an X360 controller and you can find it pretty cheap. Very sturdy as well.

Thanks Folks. I invested in an Xbox 360 controller on Game. It was relatively cheap too. < £30

I use a Steam controller, but I get a feeling you could use a DS3 controller with the Scarlet Crush Productions Toolkit if you wanted to use one as that's what I used as an alternative to the Xbox Controller before I got my Steam Controller.

Xbox-brand controllers work out of the box, and anything else is going to need additional setup. DS4Windows is super easy to set up for DualShock 4s, though, and you get full customization of every aspect of the controller. You can also use Steam's built-in DS4 support now, which works really well.

If you're interested in DS4Windows, use this version; the original was discontinued, and this guy has made some insane improvements to it. After using this version with the Sony USB Adaptor, I can't imagine using another controller.

You can get a logitech F310, they're plug and play

They even have a switch on the back that lets you switch between dinput and xinput which alone makes it compatible with a wider variety of games then the xbox-brand controllers do

Sorry to necro a dead thread, but since this is one of the first results when you search the web for Sonic Mania controller issues I thought I'd add some more current info. If you have a controller which doesn't natively work with Sonic Mania you can fix this through Steam itself. First go into Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings and make sure your controller is mapped correctly. Once you've done that, go to Library > Sonic Mania > Properties > Controller and select "Enable Steam Input" from the Override drop-down menu. That will turn on full mapping support through Steam and will allow you to play the game with any controller, so long as it is correctly mapped in the General Controller Settings menu.
