The special stages are horrible!
The special stages has tank controls and bad camera angles/depth perception. I have yet to see someone get all the emeralds in their first playthrough of the game.

I don't have a problem with the special stages at all, but that might just be me.

Im stuck in the fourth one, they are a lot better than CD at least, and one millon better than the Half pipe
You are just bad. These special stages are the best out of the classics.
easiest and funnest emeralds to get in any sonic games, focus on cutting corners

you can catch the 3rd UFO half way through at mach 1 on the first lap if you clip them right.

Uh, I did. But then I've been playing these Sonic games since they originally released in the '90's. The special stages don't have tank controls. Clearly you never played the Sonic CD special stage if you thought these controls are sluggish. I also had zero problems whatsoever with any depth perception.

As for the blue orb special stages at every checkpoint, you just have to realize that you're locked to the checkerboard lines on the stage. If you hit any direction on the D-Pad, it'll turn the moment you reach the next intersecting line. It's not an instantaneous turn. Same way it worked in Sonic 3.

Hard to have an opinion on them when I've only discovered two giant rings so far (just finished Flying Battery Zone). Seriously, what gives? I remember back in Sonic 3 even on the first playthrough you could easily find a ton of those giant rings, but now it seems that they're all well hidden.

i enjoy the stages, i just hate the floaty controls of it

you just can't breeze through the stage from left to right.. there are tons of rings. i had super sonic in the 3rd zone in act 1 already. i did however spend 9 minutes in act 1 of green hill and 8 minutes on act 2. just to show how much i explored in my first playthrough. that's exactly what i liked in sonic games and it felt just right :D
