welcome to Sonic CD, one of the best sonic games ever made which had this said special stages and noone complained about it.
I got them on my first playthrougj but ♥♥♥♥ that 6th stage
you can catch the 3rd UFO half way through at mach 1 on the first lap if you clip them right.

Uh, I did. But then I've been playing these Sonic games since they originally released in the '90's. The special stages don't have tank controls. Clearly you never played the Sonic CD special stage if you thought these controls are sluggish. I also had zero problems whatsoever with any depth perception.
As for the blue orb special stages at every checkpoint, you just have to realize that you're locked to the checkerboard lines on the stage. If you hit any direction on the D-Pad, it'll turn the moment you reach the next intersecting line. It's not an instantaneous turn. Same way it worked in Sonic 3.
i should make a vid on collecting them the quickest
you just can't breeze through the stage from left to right.. there are tons of rings. i had super sonic in the 3rd zone in act 1 already. i did however spend 9 minutes in act 1 of green hill and 8 minutes on act 2. just to show how much i explored in my first playthrough. that's exactly what i liked in sonic games and it felt just right :D
