Proper 4:3 Support?
Before release, Christian Whitehead posted this on Twitter:

But this doesn't seem to be the case.

The game does support any resolution you throw at it (so 4:3 resolutions ARE selectable), but it doesn't support 4:3 aspect ratio as Christian initially said from what I can gather.

If you choose a 4:3 resolution, you just get black bars on the top and bottom of the window with a locked 16:9 play field.

This doesn't seem to match up to what Christian said in his Tweet as he mentions "you'll just see less play area left/right".

Obviously I understand that 16:9 is the most appropriate way to play, and after my first playthrough that's how I'll do it.

But at the moment I have Sonic Mania hooked up to a CRT television with a Genesis controller hooked up via USB adapter, so it'd be nice if they could add this support as they originally stated they would.

The engine certainly seems capable of it.

Edit: If there is an .ini setting I'm missing or something, please let me know!

I finally found out from here how to get proper 4:3 in the config file. Aside from changing the screen width and height to 320 and 240 respectivly, you also have to add pixWidth=1 to the file in order for the game to actually play in 4:3 mode, and not just a letterboxed 16:9.

I kinda wish the devs told me about this line sooner. I wouldn't have had to use a cheat engine and find/change the values manually if I had known about this sooner. All is well now though, thankfully. It plays extremely well in this mode too.

Indeed.

I made a video on this a couple of months ago but didn't want to bump my old thread:
