Using a Mega Drive/Genesis controller
'Sup radical awesome dudes of the 90s...

Um, yeah. I'm trying to get a Mega Drive pad (and a MayflashUSB converter) to work with Sonic Mania, because yknow ultimate nostalgia! It seems to work with other applications like the Kega Fusion games (am I allowed to mention that here haha) and with a bit of fiddling, it works with Bluestacks too... but Steam seems to be giving me problems with it, even in Steam's own in-application control settings. My laptop recognises it's there and its buttons but Steam... doesn't.

Any suggestions? My next assumption would be using Joy2Key and assigning the functions from Mania's control menu?

Ta muchly,

Mambo

I had to set it up with Jot2Key in the end. With the default controls asd matches abc and with the w key for turning super it depends on your controller, on a 6 button one it's best to map to x,y or z. On a 3 button controller you could map it to one of the 3 buttons and just ignore a or s as the both jump.

My 8bitdo controller works just fine, you have to activate "XBox configuration assistant" in Steam controller configuration.

Doesn't that only work with Xinput controllers?

8bitdo controller is D-input when wired and X-input when connected via bluetooth. Both connection methods work when I activate "XBox configuration assistant".

So if MamboCats Mayflash adaptor works as Xinput then it should work fine then

I've configured a Direct input controller in Steam Big Picture Mode before, but the one I did it with had more buttons than a 6-button Genesis controller. I can't remember exactly what I did though. If it helps, I do remember selecting the gear in Big Picture Mode, then Controller settings to get to when the controller can be configured.
Edit: Discussion of console emulators is a taboo subject.
